Poverty - A Brighter Side

Dear Reader,

Back on the 15th November, 2011, I was at rock bottom; mentally, physically, emotionally and financially. So I hoped to think about all the brighter reasons to be happy about being poor. I was frustrated with the economy, steadily heading towards poverty, just about making my mortgage repayments and looking for work.

But hey I said, it looks like:

(a) no-one will want to rob me! I read in a crime prevention blog that a mugger is likely to look for victims wearing expensive tech such as a smartwatch or Beats headphones. Well I said to myself, the good thing about not having much money is that I don't own any of these items! When I'm walking down the street with my Primark handbag, wearing my ASDA George jeans, everyone knows I've got little money so they will keep on walking to the next person. Yay!

(b) I could write a song or poem about my poverty! As I was too broke to go out and spend any money, I would be sitting at home more. So I thought that while I'm sitting around wondering why the SKY box subscription got cancelled, I could write a song or poem about my experience of poverty! After all, some of the best songs are about being poor! Yippee!

(c) I could lose some weight! One of the best ways to lose weight is to eat less! The beauty is in the simplicity I kept trying to tell myself.  Of course, not affording much beyond pot noodles, the whole process becomes much, much easier. Sure, I'd like to order a pizza or have a meal out, but instead, its going to be beans on toast for me all week, followed by pot noodles! I just knew I'd lose the excess fat in record time. Hooray!

Have a little chuckle please.

Well, fast forward to 2019 and buying on credit, lease cars and the bank of mum and dad may have upgraded me from a pot noodle dinner to something better, but not much else beyond this has changed. So I am still trying to look on the brighter side of poverty.

I know many of us have fallen on hard times, but constantly looking at the bad side of it is not doing us any good. I hope if you are reading this you are not too terribly broke and I hope you smiled if not laughed a little.

Now is the time to appreciate some of the things we do have.

Maybe you don't have as much money as you'd like, but you've got people that love you or some sort of way of making a living that helps pay the bills and for a place to live.

We need to remember the small things in life. Its the little things that matter. One persons idea of riches and wealth could be very different to another persons. Just keep in mind, my idea of wealth back in 2011 meant the material. Today, all I want is a dog, my mental health to improve, for good health and happiness for my husband and I, and for us to enjoy our life and go on lots of walks along the beach together! How shifts in perspectives on life create a shift in attitudes never ceases to amaze me.

So readers, please be humble. Keep a keen perspective on life. Remember the little things. This may be as good as it gets for some. So always look on the brighter side of life! Live, laugh, love!!!!
