Aloha Ukulele!
Dear readers,
With the coming of a new year comes a new musical hobby: learning how to play my ukulele!
After doing a lot of online reading to research all about ukulele's, I cross referenced some facts from several informative websites. Watching lots of YouTube videos also helped me to familiarize myself with ukulele lingo, players and styles. Then, once I had settled on what size ukulele (concert) I preferred, I went and held some in the shops and stores. Then went away and searched online for the one that called my name out! Finally I settled on a concert sized Tanglewood Tiare in whiskey stain coloration. I'm happy to report that it is awesome.
Since receiving my ukulele, I have been practicing little and often, following a combination of an online "30 day ukulele challenge", some beginners "how to" books, some "YouTube" videos and just strumming away. I have only learnt about 4 chords so far, but I'm absolutely delighted with the whole process of strumming away; there is something very relaxing and entertaining about it. I am currently practicing strumming patterns and transitioning between chords in a more fluid and smoother manner, before learning more chords......
In the longer term, something I really, really, really want to aim to learn, is how to play and sing along to is "somewhere over the rainbow". Just like one of my ukulele hero's, the late Iz (Israel Kamakawiwo'ole) who sung and played the song so beautifully!!!!
