Daith Piercing

Hello all,

I had a daith piercing today and am so happy with it. It's pronounced ‘doth’ and is a very popular piercing. I find the look very attractive from a personal perspective and love the style.

The daith is the innermost piece of cartilage in the ear, the area of the cartilage itself is in a curved, slightly awkward to reach spot just above the ear canal.  As the cartilage is a lot tougher than the earlobe, usually a hollowed 16 gauge needle is used to pierce the daith. Because of the rather sensitive location in the ear, the daith piercing is quite advanced and uses a special curved needle to get through the area.

Daith piercings are more expensive than regular cartilage piercings because the piercing artist needs  enhanced skills to perform this advanced piercing procedure. The price is also effected by the demand and location of the studio.  I didn’t want to go for the cheapest option with a daith piecing, as it requires high levels of skill to perform. So I did pop in person into several studios that I shortlisted to visit after online research and phone calls. I finally found a studio I was happy with, feeling satisfied with its staff training levels, hygiene, cleanliness, and professional manner.

Pain is of course, subjective to the individuals' experience, but I found it to be incredibly painful while it was being pierced. This is due to the awkward position it holds on the ear which means it must be pierced very carefully and slowly, in order for mistakes to be minimized. So I felt the pain for longer compared to my other piercings. However, once the earring was in place and secure, the pain eased and 12 hours later I don’t feel anything at all. No regrets. Very pleased.

My daith piercing will take anywhere between 6 and 12 months to completely heal. There are unconfirmed reports that say daith piercings help with migraines, but whether this is true or false I will never know, because thankfully I don’t suffer with migraines. I will however, let you know if it helps with the chronic pain I get from my fibromyalgia. I am delighted with it and am planning on having the other ear done to match very soon.
